Can lightening your hair damage the roots?
I have naturally mousey-brown hair which I've been dyeing (full-head) platinum blonde for a few years. My salon uses 9-12% high-lift tint. As I've got a strong red underlying tone it takes ages to go the desired shade; I leave it under heat for an hour. I have some split ends but it grows very long and everyone says it looks really healthy. Could doing this affect the roots; or if the hair ends up badly damaged and I stop will new healthy hair still grow? My hairdresser thinks it could damage the roots. I've had highlights before and would prefer to stick with the full-head colour.
Answer 1:
you should have no problem as the roots are virgin hair you are not overlapping your colour continuesly as long as you follow the manufacturers instructions all will be well i should know i do my roots every three weeks as i am a natural red head and dye it blonde also the only place where i would expect damage are the ends try not to comb your colour through all the time or just the last five minutes of your treatment should keep your colour fresh from julie a qualified hairdresser
Does straightening your hair damage it? Also, which hair straightener is the best?
I want to buy a hair straightener which works on both wet and dry hair. I have long hair and would like to know which brand works best. Also, will straightening hair every week damage hair? Are serums/sprays helpful? If yes, which ones?
What is the right temperature at which to straighten hair?
Thanks!
Answer 1:
straightening is a complicated process. straightening without preparing will damage your hair. be sure to use moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and when you feel like you need it, deep conditioner. as for straightening your hair, do it layer by layer. perhaps 4 layers. when youre done, put smoothing cream on your hair to defrizz and such. the best straightener on the market that does the LEAST damage to your hair is expensive, but WELL WORTH THE MONEY and that is chi straighteners.
Answer 2:
yes. get the conair wet/dry iron. (www.conair.com) straightneng does damage ur hair but just as long as you condition it properly and use protection sprays as u straighten it. the protection i use is Nexxus Heat Protexx. and use the straighner on the lowest setting unless u have thick hair. the lower the heat, the better the protection.
Answer 3:
if you have blond hair it is not advised by any salon due to it will damage your hair and if you color your hair it will break off... straightened mine once and it took a while and did a lot of damage to mine.....
Answer 4:
yes but not if you use a thermal heat protectant and get regular trims . try CHI straightener with Kms sealant spray, works well
Answer 5:
Yes, straightening your hair damages it badly, no matter how good the brand is.
The right temperature all depends on how thick/thin your hair is; if it's long and thick, you need to use a high temperature. If it's thin then a lower temperature is needed.
Conditioning it everyday helps reduce the damage, but it doesn't get rid of the damage.
Answer 6:
The best Wet 2 Dry straightener is from Conair. Revlon has one, but it doesn't work too well, and it is really damaging.
Well, straightening your hair does damage it. Doesn't matter whether you do it once a month or every day. But you'll do good by only straightening once a week.
Serums are very helpful. Especially Thermasilk heat protection serums.
Different temperatures can be very confusing. About 200 degrees F should be good.
Remember, straightening hair gets really addicting. Some people can't even go in public without ironing their hair.
Answer 7:
if you straighten your hair once a wek it will not dmage it but if you do it every day then yes it will damage it...i dont know bout any irons that work on wet and dry hair.
Answer 8:
Straightners will damage your hair because of the heat so a protective spray will help. V05 miracle mist protects your hair and conditions it tressemes is also supposed to work well! Using one every week will cause damage but it will help to use the spray i use one almost everyday during the school year and i still have healthy hair. I reccomen you dont use a straightner on wet hair because it frys it even though it says it doesnt it damages your hair more and wont hold as well. The temp. depends on your hair type low for thin and fragile and then hotter if its thicker and curlier. Chi is supposed to be good but its expensive. Golden Hot is good and can be found at sally beauty supply stores. Hope this helped!
Answer 9:
straighting your hair everyday strips the moisture out of your hair. Bed Head works even thogh its expensive. Also, while your straightening, use a striahtening serum. its helps a lot!
Hope that helps!

Answer 10:
straigthening your hair EVERDAY will murder your hair...
i don't have a specific cbrand... i just go to my aunts hair salon and grab one.
and the only surem i use is the one that makes sure that my hair won't break or snap on me
Answer 11:
pretty much anything will damage your hair- dye, straightening, curling, and perms.
for best results and minimum damage get a chi. they're amazing.
products do help minimize damage. also deep condition once a week. for straightening herbal essences dangerously straight line is good. try the flat out finishing spray. spray it on before you use the straightener. after you're done try a good hairspray/finishing spray, like shaper by sebastian. or the weather resistant hairspray from john freida's frizz ease line.
Answer 12:
Wet 2 Straight works great and its good for ur hair because when u straighten it the water comes out the top in steam. and yea it does damage it but use a shampoo and conditioner that reverses that damage. and it helps if u use a defrizzing cream before u straighten because then it locks in the moisture in ur hair. but if i were u i would try and straighten my hair as much as possible when its dry because straightening it when it s wet is going to fry it. hope this helps!
Answer 13:
Heat damages hair.
I wouldn't buy a straightener that works on wet hair, get a chi.
Answer 14:
Straightening your hair is always damaging it. However, using sprays/serums really do help to keep it under control. Also, using a hair straightener for wet hair doesn't work even close to the same. That doubles, maybe even triples the damage. I've gone through so many hair straighteners. The best one I've had is my CHI, it's pretty expensive but it will last virtually forever. The one that I have starts blinking when it's hot enough too, so it's really easy.
Answer 15:
use a ceramic straightener and then use after straightening serum to help protect your hair
Answer 16:
revlon has a wet to straight straightner
the chi is the healthiest for your hair it gets to about 100 degrees and it is ceramic which is the best kind to get
a heat defense spray would help protect your hair
Will chemically straightening my hair damage it?
I have wavy hair, not african american like hair and I was just wondering if it would damage my hair or make it really greasy. I never wear my hair down straight but i dont want my hair to get really greasy and stuff. So will this damage my hair? How long will it last? How often do I wash my hair? I still want my hair to feel natural too though. Not hard or anything.
Thanks!
Answer 1:
I don't think that you should chemically straighten it because my friend with really pretty curls did, and it made her hair frizzy and it did barely anything.
So yeahh, I've never done it so Idk the answers to your other questions if you are still gonna do it :P
~Animal_Lover
Answer 2:
ask yur stylist for the mildest relaxer possible (mizani is the best).
it wont make it greasy.
the texture will change a litle, it'll be straighter, but still have that natural feel yu were talking about
it'll only get damaged if you dont keep it maintained
it'll last 4-6 weeks, depending on how fast yur hair grows (then yu'll need a touch up)
Answer 3:
Most certainly! It will definitely damage your hair, but it wouldn't make it greasy.
Chemically straightening, otherwise known as chemical re-bonding, uses the same chemicals as perming. It is permanent and will only grow out over time, therefore, your re-growth will be wavy. You wash your like you normally would, aside from the initial period which your hairdresser would recommend.
I would strongly advise against it. Buy yourself a good straightener.
Does straightening your hair damage it a lot or is it worth it?
I just bought a straightener and I'm kind of afraid I might damage my hair. Should I get speacial shampoo or something?
Answer 1:
It can damage your hair but in my opinion its worth it.. try a protective spray such as Lee Stafford POKER STRAIGHT Flat Iron Protection Shine Mist. Also, make sure your straighteners are good, because the crappier the straighteners, the crappier condition your hair will be in! GHDs are the best. Also the better the straighteners, the less times you'll have to go over that part of your hair and the less damage you do to your hair.
Also try not to straighten your hair every time you wash it... Give your hair a break every so often and try a conditioning mask weekly to avoid your hair drying out. Good luck, hope they work out for you x
Answer 2:
strightening your hair doesnt damage
Answer 3:
with a FLATIRON it wont damage your hair at all well it shouldnt i tried it and it didnt damage it.
Answer 4:
see here dude,
i have tried straighting my hair and till now nothing has been done.
it all depends on ur hair structure. nothing else.
Answer 5:
Okay, well it depends on what type of hair you have ...i think you should ask a hair dresser or hairstylist and let them feel your hair so they can know the texture ...be careful who you ask make sure to ask someone that has dealt with different textures and types of hair.
Answer 6:
just use like a flat iron spray and youll be fine.
Answer 7:
here's a little trick. apply a coat of hair serum to your hair before straightening, this help to reduce the damage as well as reduce frizz. also do not let the straightening stay on the hair for longer than 5 seconds.
Answer 8:
i use sleek look shampoo and conditioner.. its great... I have been straightening my hair for 4 yrs and it is not really damaged
Answer 9:
if not done properly it can damage your hair. also do not to it everday at the most your probally should use a straightener 3 times a week. if you want to straighten your hair everyday then blow dry it.
Answer 10:
it does a lot of damage but i do it...
Answer 11:
straightining your hair can damage it but u can just a perm
How can I repair and prevent hair damage?
Hi there :) I've been straightening my hair with an iron for a good couple years now, and the damage is definitely starting to show. I've tried using sprays(to protect the hair) before flat ironing it, but it doesn't seem to be doing the trick. I know, I'm not supposed to straighten it daily, but it just bothers me so much if I don't straighten it.
Are there any products/tips that you can recommend so I might be able to give my poor hair a break? :D I've read about deep conditioning, but I have no idea how to do it and if it works well.
Anyways, thanks for any replies I really appreciate it!

Healthy hair tips:
Use a moisturizing shampoo condtioner and leave in creme. I reccomened Neutrogena Triple Moisture, shampoo conditioner and deep recovery hair mask. It nourishes and
revitalizes dry dull damaged hair to softer shinier healthier hair everytime you wash it, it might cost alot but it's worth it;

If you dye your hair alot, leave your hair alone and wait to dye it atleast 3 years later or so. Hair dye has terrible chemicals that kill dry/damage your hair.
Brush your hair before shampooing and conditioner so your hair won't be tangeled and managable.
Comb your hair about 20 times each side so your natural oils can fall into the rest of your hair for natural shine
Don't wash your hair everyday try 3 times a week, Washing hair everyday strips the natural oils of your hair into duller dry hair.
Discontinue to heat style your hair or your hair will end up more dry/damaged, wait till it's completely healthy and maybe heat style once a week.
Avoid combing hair while wet, gently use a wide tooth comb, hair is very vulnerable while wet and can break off easily.
Don't put your hair into pigtails, buns or ponytails while wet, that causes split ends, breakage and damage.
Deep condition twice a week to bring back moisture to your hair.
Trim your hair tips every 4-6 weeks to promote healthy hair grow and prevent split ends from happening.
While shampooing massage your scalp with your fingertips slowly, not with your nails, nails damage the scalp and nails tend to be dirty. it's not necessary to shampoo the ends, then rinse with warm water to open the hair cuticles.
While conditioner leave on for about 2-4 minutes so you can get great results then comb hair with wide tooth comb then rinse with very cold water to help seal the hair cuticles.
If you use gel/hairspray/moose stop using them. They damage and dry up your hair because of the alchohol it contains.
If you use heat appliaces (blowdryers, curling irons, hair straightener) use a heat protecter spray so it'll protect your hair from heat.
If hair is really dry, go to the salon to get a deep treatment on your hair.
Once a month use a special deep conditioning treatment like olive oil, vitamin e oil, mayonaisse, eggs, hot oil treatment, castor oil, coconut oil almond oil or avocado.
Take multivimains, vitamin e, follic acid or prenatal vitamins to promote healthy hair growth.
Drink lots of water for shinier/healthier hair and eat lots of protein and healthy food like meat, milk, cheese, peanut butter, eggs pasta, cooked beans and raw vegetables.
If your in the sun alot buy a cap or a hoodie to protect your hair from the sun, heat damages and drys out your hair.
Buy a leave-in-conditioner/leave-in conditioner/creme to moisturize your hair all day long and don't rinse.
After your out of the shower set your blowdryer on cool setting and blowdryer your hair for 2 minutes, this will help seal the hair cuticles for a smooth shiny surface.
While combing hair, comb it gentle to avoid breakage.

First of all use shampoo and conditioner for dry damaged
hair, I recomend "Silk Elements"
And then lightly cover your hair in something called "silk"
It's like an oil.
You can do it before you streighten it and it will prevent dameage and add moisture to your hair.
This is what I do and My hair is very pretty.
c:
I used to spin 6 to 7 hours streightening my hair, it's naturally curly and frizzy, and Now it only takes up to 45 minutes.
But my hair is pretty long so yea.

You can find these products at any cosmetology store, I get mine from "Sallys Beatuy suply"
Answer 3:
You should cut your hair a little, to lose the popped and uneven ends and your hair grows faster after you cut it too. I use pantene 10x stronger, try that. Also, if you want to straighten then use a salon quality hair straightener. Go to your salon- Usually $140, I got one from a friend though (Maxi-glide- $80, and it works great. I use steam and low heat setting so it doesn't dry it out. Also some leave in conditioner will help protect it through the day. Umm Infusium treatment is good too.
Answer 4:
Hey! I think I may be able to help you with your hair straightneing dilema! There is this product by Matrix called "Sleek.Look" and you just spray it onto the hair that you are going to straighten and then go to the next part of hair that you are going to straighten next. Never spray your whole head with the Sleek.Look spray at once because you can never straighten your whole head at once. But besides that, I use it every day and it prevents flyaways with single strands of hair that like to fly up, it prevents any further damage to the hair, and it also acts as a sort of spray, but the best part is that it smells REALLY good! ^_^ Hope that bit of info helps you!
Answer 5:
I have some at home hair conditioners that you can make yourself, with instructions. =)
The Ingredients
1 small jar of real mayonnaise
1/2 of an avocado
The Instructions
Put together in a medium bowl and squish together with your hands until it's a minty green color. Smooth into hair all the way to the tips. Put on a shower cap or wrap your head with saran wrap.
Leave on for 20 minutes. For deeper conditioning put a hot, damp towel around your head -over the saran wrap. And if you have really long hair and only need deep conditioning at the ends, cut the ingredients in half and apply only to the ends and just wrap them.
-
Ingredients:
1 avocado (peeled and mashed)
coconut milk
Directions:
Combine mashed avacodo with some coconut milk. Mash together until its smooth and about as thick as shampoo. Comb it through the hair and let sit for 10 -15 minutes, wash out.
-
Ingredients:
1 teaspoon baby oil
1 egg yolk
1 cup water
Directions:
Beat the egg yolk until its frothy, add the oil then beat again. Add to the water. Massage into the scalp and throughout your hair. Rinse well.
-
Also, you can buy them from the drugstore, and the instructions will be on the back incase you don't know how to do it.
How to get rid of split ends:
1. Use specialist products that are designed to seal the splits temporarily in order to catch any splits that are shorter than the length you want to cut your hair to and to allow your hair to grow a little longer before you trim.
2. Go for deep conditioning treatment every week, if possible and especially if your hair is prone to splitting, chemically treated or treated by ceramic straighteners. Conditioning is mandatory every time you have a chemical.
3. Have a Trim regularly
4. Avoid excess heat and too much brushing and combing and please don't brush, scratch or shampoo hair and scalp before any chemical service. Never hesitate to Invest in quality combs and real bristle brushes.
5. Do shampoo your hair after a workout or strenuous exercise. The salt from perspiration will erode your hair. If you work out more than once a week, consult your stylist for your particular needs.
And fantabulous sprays to put on your hair to help protect it from damage:
