Why was finasteride licensed for the treatment of hairloss rather than Dutasteride?
To receive an indication by the FDA (approved use), the drug manufacturers have to submit an ANDA (abbreviate new drug application), as well as fund multimillion dollar studies. If the manufacturer sees no additional monetary value in seeking additional indications for their drug products then they have no cause to expend millions of dollars.
What are the exact risks for taking finasteride (propecia) as a 17 year old?
If I am satisfied with my physical development, what risks could there be? I feel that it is necessary to start taking it, so will I get away with it?
Answer 1:
You Are male?
Then you are most likely okay ....
Who should NOT take PROPECIA?
PROPECIA is for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in MEN ONLY and should not be taken by women (see A warning about PROPECIA and pregnancy).
PROPECIA should not be taken by children.
Anyone allergic to any of the ingredients.
A warning about PROPECIA and pregnancy.
Women who are or may potentially be pregnant:
– must not use PROPECIA
– should not handle crushed or broken tablets of PROPECIA.
If a woman who is pregnant with a male baby absorbs the active ingredient in PROPECIA, either by swallowing or through the skin, it may cause abnormalities of a male baby's sex organs. If a woman who is pregnant comes into contact with the active ingredient in PROPECIA, a doctor should be consulted. PROPECIA tablets are coated and will prevent contact with the active ingredient during normal handling, provided that the tablets are not broken or crushed.

Has anyone found generic propecia (finasteride) 1mg in an American pharmacy?
I have been taking the Merck version, but I understand Propecia is now "off" patent. Is it now available in generic form, in regular pharmacies? Is it less expensive, additionally, than the original kind?
Answer 1:
I think Noor is right. Proscar is off patent. And the good thing with proscar is that some guys I know have managed to get proscar covered by their insurance.
Generic Propecia (finasteride) is ok. I use it with same results and unfortunately same sides(a bit dry feeling in the scalp) as brand propecia. Have tried lots of herbal c..p before it and laser combs, so far the only thing that prevents my hairloss, not much regrowth, but has stopped my hairloss completely.
I buy from this pharmacy for the last 2 years -
http://www.1rx.biz/generic_propecia.html . It is under $1 per pill.
But I really hope there will be a real permanent and safer solution than finasteride discovered soon. When I read all the side effects horror stories at propeciahelp.com I understand that my itchy and dry scal feeling is nothing vs what other guys say they have been through when on propecia. So I start to worry if there should be some long term side effects that have not yet been discovered and that I could have.. Hope not
Answer 2:
Propecia is not off patent. Propecia is Finesteride 1mg. Indication : Hair loss
What is off patent is Proscar. Proscar is Finesteride 5mg. Indication: BPH (for prostrate)
So, to answer your question - no, Propecia is not off patent, therefore not available in Finesteride 1mg tablets.
And yes, generic Proscar (Finesteride 5mg) is much cheaper than brand name Proscar.
Answer 3:
It is now avaliable generically, and should be avaliable at your pharmacy. Teva is manufacturing the generic. I do work in a pharmacy and I don't recall seeing it, but I will check tomorrow when I work.
How can I prevent inflamation from finasteride/Propecia?
It's happened to me twice already...once with Avodart (dutasteride) and now with finasteride (generic Propecia). After a year or so I start to get all kinds of inflammation problems. These are:
-dull ache in prostate
-pain in left knee
-pain in left testicle/epydidimitis
Aspirin or other anti-inflammatories help, but what other options are there short of stopping fin altogether? Current dose is .25 mg daily.
Answer 1:
What makes you think its the propecia. The only side effects listed are an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives).
Other, less serious side effects have been reported but usually resolve with continued treatment. Continue to take finasteride and notify your doctor if you experience
decreased libido (sex drive);
decreased volume of ejaculate;
impotence (trouble getting or keeping an erection); or
breast tenderness or enlargement.
I have been taking for 3 years and am very satisfied. You may want to go to a urologist, or a new urologist
Has anyone had any problems with Finasteride?
I am almost losing my erection. Should i keep using it?! Or should i switch to Minoxidil ?
Answer 1:
First consult your doctor rather than taking advise from here.
